Trams of Mumbles.
For this brief I was challenged with bringing a local business into the 21st Century using branding. Since I live in Swansea (and love an English breakfast) I decided to focus the brief on a local breakfast café called Trams of Mumbles. Initially owners Karl and Julie allowed me to explore the potential for their business but had no intention of using my work. However, two years and several lockdowns later Trams of Mumbles are proudly rebranded and have never seen so many customers in all their years of business.
The Problem.
Whilst conducting primary research I discovered that many of the public would simply walk past Trams of Mumbles and were unaware of them being a café. Many people found the choice of green for a breakfast café sign unpleasant and unwelcoming.
The Challenge.
How can I help Trams of Mumbles stand out of the crowd by bringing them into the 21st Century and ensuring people know that Trams of Mumbles are a breakfast café?
The Logo.
Inspired by the famous Mumbles Tram, the new logo was created to portray Trams of Mumbles in a welcoming and friendly light. The logo also makes use of coffee beans as the headlights as a subtle and playful tool.
The Typography.
Typography is an important part of the new brand for Trams of Mumbles. Using an art deco styled typography, I was able to help introduce a small part of heritage within the brand to give recognition to the legacy of the Mumbles Tram. The typeface used throughout the brand is called Market Deco.
The Colours.
The introduction of red could not be dismissed when creating a new brand for Trams of Mumbles, helping them to become more recognisable and bring back the heritage of the business name. To compliment the iconic tram red, a pale beige and dark grey were established to bring balance to the brand and keep that tint of traditionalism present.
"Working with Ben has been a wonderful experience and a privilege as he was so professional and caring with all the work and effort he put in for us. From redesigning our menus and business cards to creating brand new aprons and loyalty tickets...excellent job."
